European individual eventing champion Nicola Wilson is still receiving treatment in urgent care at Southmead Hospital after falling from her horse at the Badminton Horse Trials the previous weekend. Wilson, a native of Northallerton, North Yorkshire, fell as she approached the finish line of her cross-country run with JL Dublin on Saturday, May 7.
British Equestrian said in a statement issued yesterday (May 10) that she had “several spinal fractures” but that she did not need surgery. BE reported that Southmead Hospital’s qualified employees gave Nicola great treatment when she was transported there.

Details of the Nicola Wilson Horse Accident. Wilson, who is based in Danby Wiske, near Northallerton, fell from JL Dublin on Saturday, May 7, during the cross-country section of the Badminton competition. The current European champion in eventing and 2012 Olympic silver medallist have flown right away to Southmead Hospital in Bristol, where they have remained ever since.
Her spinal injuries were serious, and she is still receiving therapy in critical care. She will likely remain in Bristol for at least one more week before being transferred to a facility that specializes in spinal care closer to her home in North Yorkshire.
According to a statement on her website, Nic is currently in critical care and is expected to remain there for seven to 10 days before being moved to a spinal unit closer to home. Four and a half months after her injury at Badminton in May, British European champion Nicola Wilson was discharged from The James Cook University Hospital’s spinal rehabilitation unit and returned to her home and family. Nicola goes on to thank the staff at Southmead Hospital and the James Cook Hotel for their assistance, calling them her “newfound family.”
Her reduced range of motion in her hands, arms, and to some degree, legs as a result of spinal impairment necessitates that she relearn several jobs.
Despite the difficult path ahead, Nicola remains unflinchingly hopeful and practical; at the end of the day, spending time at home with her family has evolved into the best gift of all.
