In 1986, Roy Herron was first elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives, taking over Governor Ned McWherter’s seat. Between the 95th and 99th Tennessee General Assemblies, Herron served in the House; from the 100th to the 107th, he served in the Senate. He also rose through the ranks to become the floor leader of the Senate Democratic Caucus and, eventually, its chairman. Roy Herrson was blessed with three boys, John, Rick, and Benjamin, and he was happily married to Nancy Miller-Herron. Born and bred in Tennessee, Roy Herron’s ancestor was one of the original two settlers in Weakley County in the 1820s. Herron helped out on his family’s farm as a child and was an Eagle Scout.

He graduated with the highest honors from the University of Tennessee at Martin in 1975. Herron was the ninth Governor of the Tennessee Intercollegiate State Legislature, a statewide organization of college students. Before becoming Governor, he served as the organization’s Lieutenant Governor.

As a Rotary Scholar, he studied at the University of St Andrews in Scotland in 1975 and 1976. In 1980, he became one of the first two Vanderbilt University graduates with two degrees—a J.D. and an M.Div.

Due to injuries, he sustained in a jet ski accident, Roy Herron, a longtime state legislator from Tennessee and the former head of the Democratic Party in that state, passed away on Sunday. According to his relatives, Herron passed away in Nashville’s Vanderbilt Medical Center.

He had been hospitalized since July 1 following an accident with another jet ski on Kentucky Lake, which resulted in serious injuries to his arm and pelvis as well as internal bleeding, according to his family’s Caring Bridge page.

The incident’s details were unknown at the time, but the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency was looking into it. After serving in the Tennessee House and Senate for 26 years, Dresden, Tennessee, lawyer Herron advanced to the position of floor leader and Democratic caucus chair. His website claims that the birth of his youngest son only caused him to miss one day of school. He chaired the state Democratic Party from 2013 to 2015.
