Prior to enrolling at Patrick School, he relocated to the United States to study at Our Savior, New American School in Centereach, New York. Sanogo’s family still resides in Mali and he is of Malian origin. He left The Patrick School and enrolled at the University of Connecticut.

Adama Sango, a rising basketball player for the University of Connecticut (UConn), had a successful sophomore year during the 2021–2022 campaign. He played in 29 games, starting 28, although missing four due to an abdominal injury. Adama Sanogo led the BIG EAST and UConn in offensive rebounding, field goals, and rebounding with 8.9 rebounds per game on average.
He received three BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selections, two BIG EAST Player of the Week honors, and a selection to the Battle 4 Atlantis All-Tournament Team. Sango had one of his best performances against highly regarded Auburn, tallying a career-high 30 points.
Sango started each of the 23 games he played in during his rookie season at UConn, including the final 19. With 7.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game while shooting.554 from the field, he came in sixth in the BIG EAST.
