The ‘grueling’ anguish that Awaab Ishak’s family has gone through since the toddler’s untimely demise has been revealed by them.
The respiratory condition that the two-year-old from Rochdale died from in December 2020 was brought on by the mold in the one-bedroom flat he lived in with his parents.
Awaab’s parents had previously complained to Rochdale Boroughwide Housing (RBH) about the condition of the home, it was revealed at an inquest at Rochdale Coroner’s Court.
Now that the family has talked about it, they say they feel “stuck” in the flat and “fearful” that the mold would eventually harm their child.

Faisal Abdullah and Aisha Amin, Awab Ishak’s parents, are natives of Sudan.
Awaab was the first child born to Faisal Abdullah and Aisha Amin. Mr. Abdullah moved to the UK in 2016 from Sudan. His wife joined him in 2017.
Mr. Abdullah is a highly competent and knowledgeable speaker of English, but his wife is not.

In July 2020, Mr. Abdullah began requesting aid from the family’s medical connections since Ms. Amin was now expecting her second child.
A health visitor called Caroline Ridley paid a visit at the House location on July 1, 2020.
Mr. Abdullah had showed her the mold in the bathroom and kitchen, she said in court testimony. He asked for help with the active move application.
Ms. Ridley expressed her worries about the mold in the house and its possible implications on Awaab’s health in a letter that she addressed to RBH on July 9, 2020.
Cause of Awaab Ishak’s Death
The death of two-year-old Awaab Ishak stunned the country, and some of its most senior politicians have voiced outrage that this was allowed to happen.
The mold that killed Awaab was in the bathroom and kitchen of the Rochdale flat he lived in with his parents, Faisal Abdullah and Aisha Amin. Abdullah initially informed RBH about the mold in 2017.

The little child, who “was full of life and laughter,” died from prolonged exposure to moisture and mildew in his Rochdale home, a coroner said Tuesday.
