She initially met Sam McCallion (1923-1997), the man she would wed on September 29, 1951, at an Anglican Church congregation in Toronto. Additionally, as a wedding present from McCallion’s in-laws, the couple acquired a piece of land close to the Ontario town of Streetsville, and they moved there in December 1951.

She and her husband founded The Streetsville Booster in 1964 before she entered politics. I had a gorgeous husband, Ms. McCallion said. He retreated. Because I handled the politics and he took care of his business, we got along wonderfully well. Sadly, Her husband died in 1997 as a result of Alzheimer’s disease.

The Career of Hazel McCallion

In order to pursue a career in politics, she left the corporate sector in 1967. From 1970 until 1973, she was mayor of Streetsville. In addition, Streetsville, Port Credit, and the borough of Mississauga were combined to become The City of Mississauga in 1974. McCallion was elected as Mississauga’s third mayor in 1978.

McCallion won 12 straight municipal elections, earning the nickname “Hurricane Hazel” for her tenacity and desire to affect change in her hometown. While she was mayor, Mississauga’s population grew and the city remained debt-free. 2014 saw the release of McCallion’s autobiography, Hurricane Hazel – A Life with Purpose.

Since leaving office at the end of her term in 2014, she has served as the first Chancellor of Sheridan College and Special Advisor to the University of Toronto Mississauga. Ontario has designated February 14 as Hazel McCallion Day in honor of McCallion’s birthday.

She would turn 102 years old on February 14, 2023. Because of her efforts, she has gained the respect of many people. When word spread that she had died on Sunday, everyone was astounded. We really pray for her to have complete peace in paradise and for her family to be able to handle this sorrow bravely.
