However, his move to the Orlando Pirates in 1998 cemented his legacy. For nine years, Papi was an important player for the Buccaneers. He played in over 150 games and embodied the spirit of a true Buccaneer both on and off the field. From 1998 to 2000, Papi also played for the South African national side, earning an appearance at AFCON 2000.

Unfortunately, he had to quit in 2007 due to a severe knee issue. He coached the Pirates again after retirement and worked as a soccer commentator on SABC Sporta until his death on November 25, 2023.

Papi Khomane Parents

Every successful person has a strong foundation built by their family. Papi Khomane’s parents, Johannes Yster Khomane and Rita Khomane, laid the groundwork for the man he is today.

Get to know Father Johannes “Yster” Khomane

Papi’s pillar of strength and leadership was Johannes “Yster” Khomane, a Bucs legend in his own right. The father-son duo left an indelible mark on the Orlando Pirates, which is uncommon in the club’s history. Yster Khomane was a well-known right-back for the Buccaneers in the late 1970s.

His career has also taken him to the Pimville United Brothers (PUBS) and the Moroka Swallows, where he showcased his defensive skills. Because of his physical strength and endurance, Yster earned the nickname ‘Iron’ from teammates and fans. He was well-known for his toughness, aerial ability, and leadership characteristics.

Similarly, he served as captain of the Orlando Pirates for many years, contributing to the club’s glory days. Notably, the legendary defender helped the Pirates win numerous trophies, including the NPSL championship and the Mainstay Cup. He also played in the 1980 Mainstay Cup final against the Moroka Swallows, which was voted the fan favorite match of the decade. When asked about his child, Yster recalls with fondness seeing Papi firmly mark opponents such as Pollen “Trompies” Ndlanya.

Meet Papi Khomane Mother, Rita Khomane

Papi’s mother, Rita Khomane, was essential in supporting both her husband and son. While her name may not be as well-known, she had a significant impact on Papi’s life. Rita’s kind demeanor provided Papi with the security and affection he required to fuel his goals. Her attendance at Orlando home games demonstrated her dedication and affection for the game.

Rita’s role as the quiet authority behind the Khomane family was critical in establishing Papi’s character. She also helped the father-son duo’s success and legacy within the Orlando Pirates brotherhood. The soccer world will always remember Papi Khomane for the enormous achievements of his parents, Johannes and Rita Khomane.
