Nico Williams was born in Pamplona, Spain, to Ghanaian parents fleeing the Liberian Civil War eight years prior. His mother’s name is Maria Williams, and his father’s name is Felix Williams. Maria described how they left Ghana and traveled through the Sahara without food or water, how they could have been killed, and how they hid stuff in the best possible location.

Nico Williams’ elder brother, Iaki Williams Arthuer, is a striker for Ghana’s national team and La Liga club Athletic Bilbao. He grew up in Athletic Bilbao’s development system and has participated in over 350 first-team games for the club, setting a La Liga record with almost 240 consecutive games played. Williams, a Ghanaian-born Spaniard, made his national team debut in 2016. He chose to represent Ghana internationally in the World Cup in 2022.
Williams was given a Basque first name to honor a Caritas Internationalis staff member in Bilbao who assisted Williams’ parents when they arrived in Spain the year he was born. Williams participated in Amazon Prime’s television documentary series Six Dreams during the 2017-2018 season.
