Malinin comes from a skating dynasty that includes his grandfather, Valery Malinin, a former Soviet Union competitor who currently instructs skaters in Novosibirsk, Siberia. Ilia also has a younger sister named Liza, whom he is currently teaching to skate. Liza, who was born in 2014, is already nine years old and has already begun training under the supervision of her family.

Her mother, Tatiana Malinina, is a former figure skater.

She also won the NHK Trophy twice, in 1998 and 2001, and the Uzbek national championship ten times between 1993 and 2002. In 2000, Malinina married Roman Skorniakov, and their son, Ilia Malinin, was born in 2004. The couple has a daughter, whom they welcomed in 2014.

Roman Skorniakov, a Russian figure skater, was born on February 17, 1976. He began his skating career in Russia, but in 1996 he switched to Uzbekistan. Skorniakov was Uzbek national champion from 1997 to 2003, and he competed in the Winter Olympics in 1998 and 2002, placing 19th both times. His most notable ISU Championship performance was finishing eighth at the Four Continents Championships in 2000 and 2002. After retiring from competitive skating in 2003, Roman now works as a skating instructor in Reston, Virginia.
