On August 27, 1990, Tori Bowie was born in Sand Hill, Rankin County, Mississippi. Dennis Smith and Bobbie Dennis Smith are her parents. The deceased athlete and her sister were reportedly placed in foster care together. Her younger sister was eleven months old at the time, and she was just two.

Tamarra, Tori Bowie’s younger sister, traveled with her while she participated in various sports all across the world.
Tamarra described herself as the annoying younger sibling. She cites her male cousins, who she played basketball with, for “making me tough” by “never taking it easy…never letting me win,” for instilling in her a competitive spirit. She was successful, helping her sister win back-to-back basketball state championships.
Bowie’s first coach, Angie Reynolds, noted that her passion for basketball nearly put an end to her running career. In addition to her athletic career, Tori Bowie also a model who appeared in several journals and fashion endeavors. Bowie took part in advertisements for Adidas as well as for Vogue and Sports Illustrated.
