The couple left Czechoslovakia in 1988 in order to get away from the communist regime. Along with Tom and Petz, their two first children, they moved to Austria and then to Canada.
In order to get over their linguistic barriers, the pair were even forced to take English classes when they first arrived in Canada. Milos had positions as a hardware administrator in a brewery and a flour factory.

He practiced tennis until he was twelve, learning from his father, Milos.
Subsequently, in or around 2002, Vasek met Vernon-born Russian tennis teacher Vadim Korkh, who turned out to be his most permanent professional mentor.
But two years later, in 2004, the athlete’s father moved to Vancouver and started coaching him full-time.
