The mother of Mikala, Violet Jones Medusky, passed away in 2011 after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). After his mother passed away, Mikala and his family worked relentlessly to raise ALS awareness. Violet Jones Medusky received an ALS diagnosis in May 2004.
For the deceased surfer and triathlete, it was a crushing blow. Mikala and his family watched while Violet battled the terrible cancer. Throughout her daughter’s ALS journey, Mikala’s mother served as a ray of hope for her by getting involved in Hawaii’s ALS community and raising money and awareness for ALS initiatives.
She sadly passed away in 2011 from problems connected to ALS, and at her desire, funds from her estate were used to establish ALS Ohana of Hawaii. Enhancing the standard of living for ALS patients and their families in Hawaii is the goal of ALS Ohana of Hawaii.
