Kelly Middaugh was raised in a home where sports were a big deal. Her parents are both very successful curlers, therefore the sport runs in her family.
Being a three-time world champion—something no one else has achieved—her father Wayne has an incredible record. He has won titles in three different divisions. Sherry Middaugh, her mother, has also achieved success in curling. She has one Saskatchewan title and five Ontario championships to her credit.
Kelly, who was born in Victoria Harbour, Ontario, Canada, on August 2, 1999, is currently the captain of Team Laurie St-Georges at Algonquin College. At eleven years old, she reluctantly joined a Sunday youth curling league, which was the beginning of her curling career. Her first misgivings aside, she stuck with it for three or four years.
Kelly proceeded to Wilfrid Laurier University, where she was a competitive curler. He was named a first-team All-Canadian and had excellent success as a Golden Hawk, placing sixth in the U Sports competition. Kelly participated in two U Sports/Curling Canada University Curling Championships while attending Wilfrid Laurier University. Before attending Algonquin College, Kelly received an undergraduate degree in Global Studies from Wilfrid Laurier University, where she also played curling.
Kelley Middaugh’s Parents: Wayne and Sherry
Kelly grew up in a family of athletes. Along with the rest of the family, Kelly’s younger sister Emily curls, as do her parents Wayne and Sherry. Sherry Middaugh, her mother, is an Ontario curler from Victoria Harbour. She’s been successful at curling. She has one Saskatchewan title and five Ontario championships to her credit.
The native of Saskatchewan, Middaugh placed fourth in the 1986 Canadian Junior Women’s Curling Championship with a 6-4 record after winning the 1986 Saskatchewan Junior Women’s Championship. She is the Team Hollie Duncan’s coach at the moment.
In addition to curling, Middaugh owns and operates her own company, 4M Home & Garden. Wayne Middaugh, a fellow curler, is her husband. He holds the honor of being the Canadian Men’s Curling Championship (Brier) winner three times: as skip in 1998, as third in 2012, and as second in 1993.
Born in Brampton, Ontario, on September 20, 1967, Robert Wayne Middaugh currently resides in Victoria Harbour, Ontario, with Sherry. He is a golf professional with the PGA of Canada and the general manager of Port Carling Golf & Country Club.
Kelly Middaugh’s sister, Emily Middaugh
As has been the family tradition, Kelly’s sister Emily, who is twenty years old and four years Kelly’s junior, has enthusiastically taken up curling. She just won the Junior Curling Cup as a member of the U21 Ontario team. She also earned herself a curling vacation to Switzerland during the holidays, placing second in the Canadian Junior Cup with Team Grace Cave.
Emily tried her hand at many other sports before settling on curling. She gradually felt drawn in by the warm and inviting curling community, though, and couldn’t help but continue the family legacy.
