Her older brother Peter is a Harvard University graduate, actuary, and mathematician. When she was five years old, she started taking ballet courses, and she continued to do so until she was in her early teens.

At that point, she discovered how limited her technique was and how little ballet was taught where she lived. When she was 15 years old, she went to see “Pippin” in Manhattan and changed her career aspirations to become a Broadway musical dancer.
