He was always on a tractor, even on weekends, as the son of a sugarcane farmer, making sure the sugarcane fields were ready. It taught him at a young age that he didn’t want to be a sugarcane farmer, but it also instilled in him a strong work ethic, according to Landry. In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he attended Catholic High School.
He hoped to attend Louisiana State University and play basketball. Landry attended Catholic High School and played basketball there. As a child, he dreamed of playing basketball for Louisiana State University. After high school, he tried out for his freshman team but was rejected. But he didn’t give up and continued to train every day at a nearby park until he made it in his sophomore year. Between 1997 and 2000, he was a walk-on.

According to Landry, he only played seven minutes in his senior year, so he realized early on in his career that he wasn’t going to be able to play in the NBA and be paid for it. That’s when I had the idea for Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux brew. While traveling the world with the LSU basketball team, he and his walk-on teammate Jack Warner saw a need for something that brought Louisiana, athletics, and their story to the forefront.
On the way home from the University of Tennessee game, they started scribbling on the bev sheets. They discussed their proposal with their entrepreneurship professor, who completed his business plan assignment every year, when they returned to LSU. They had only one place in mind where they could flip burgers and sling beer for a living, so they started working at the restaurant.
They began developing business plans and enlisted the assistance of certain investors. Six banks declined loans, but the players continued to play as walk-ons. They were successful in obtaining the loan on their seventh attempt. The Walk-On began franchising in 2014 and now has 75 locations in 13 states.
