The final round of American Idol season 21 auditions will air on ABC on March 26 at 8 p.m. ET. Many candidates from across the country will compete in the two-hour show to earn a spot in the race by demonstrating their vocal abilities.
The winners of the competition will receive a platinum pass, while the losers will go home empty-handed. Cam Amen, 27, grew up in foster care in Anderson, Indiana, and went to several secondary schools in Lecanto and Crystal River before auditioning this week. He has a strong resonant voice, as seen in the network’s test footage, which appears to have pleased the judges. In a teaser video, judges Katy Perry and Lionel Richie can be seen crying after hearing his vocal and dramatic life story.
Cam Amen, an American Idol contestant, bursts into tears in front of the judges
Amen is a popular Tik-Tok singer with over 3,000 followers and 17,000 favorites. He was taken away from his mother and raised in a foster home. Before performing Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah and playing the sounds on a piano, Cam described his American Idol audition as “rough.” He continued, saying:
“We were in foster care for a long time.” I moved when I was 18 and brought my sibling and sister with me. I realized I needed to properly educate them and see them through high school.”
Amen has raised his brothers on his own for the past five years. Judge Luke Bryan couldn’t stop crying during Cam’s tryout. Bryan received thunderous applause from the three judges and added,
“You’ve been through a lot, but the rest of your life awaits you, do you hear me?”
Cam, whose real name is Cameron Osterloh, works as a waiter at City Fire in Florida and owns a dog named Karma. Five years ago, he posted his first YouTube cover video of Parson James’ Waiting Game. Amen finished second in the Sanford performance challenge and received $500. He also performed at a charity concert for Ukrainian migrants in Lady Lake.
The contestant’s vocal range is extensive. In another interview, he talked about his American Idol audition, saying,
“I’ve worked so hard over the years just to get in front of people to sing, so to know I’m on TV singing in front of millions is incredible.”
He plays many original songs as well as some covers on his Tik-Tok account, including I Will Always Love You, Lay Me Down, and It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday. Cam’s most popular film is a competition duo featuring him and his grandmother singing Say Something. In the video’s commentary, he revealed that his grandmother, who loved the song, died while he was singing it to her.
The American Idol video, however, does not reveal whether Cam passed his audition. Watch ABC on Sunday, March 26 at 8 p.m. ET to find out if Cam Amen passes his American Idol audition and advances to the Hollywood Week round. Fans can watch the show on Hulu and the network’s website one day after it airs on television.
