In Merced, central California, on December 31, 1952, Ogletree was born into a family of hardworking farmers. Later, they split up.

He graduated with honors from Stanford University’s political science BA program in 1974, Harvard Law School’s MA program in 1975, and Stanford University’s JD program in 1978.

While still a law student, he became the president of the Black American Law Students Association, which later became the National Black Law Students Association.

From the time of his law school graduation until 1985, Ogletree worked for the District of Columbia Public Defender Service as a staff attorney, deputy director, trial chief, and training director.

He has represented celebrities like Anita Hill and Tupac Shakur in court. In 1985, he began to teach at Harvard Law School.

In 1992, he was named the Jesse Climenko Professor of Law and vice dean for clinical programs.

Ogletree’s wife initially became aware of health issues in 2014, when he was sixty years old. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in May 2015, when he was sixty-two years old.

On July 13, 2016, Ogletree announced that he had received a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease in the early stages.

Ogletree vanished in 2019; after a comprehensive search for missing people, the police found him safe. Ogletree died on August 4, 2023, at the age of 70.
