He was born in 1975 to Bryan Stone, a certified public accountant, and Lorraine, a florist. Two years old when his parents divorced, and he was just two years old. At the age of four, his mother and grandmother instilled in him an appreciation for food.

Curtis developed a passion for food after tasting a batch of fudge made by his maternal grandmother. On his official website, Stone describes the gastronomic experience that changed his life:

“I have learned everything I know about food and cooking from my mother and grandma. My mother, Lozza, is a skilled cook and baker, and I would follow her every move as she worked.

He then continued:

“When I was four years old and still a little eater, I had my first truly memorable supper. My grandmother’s Yorkshire fudge was one of the first truly sweet things I ever tasted. I could not quit contemplating it. Since that first bite, whenever I visited my grandmother’s home, we would get to work in the kitchen and make fudge together. It was our expertise.”

Stone, the “hungry little monster who couldn’t get enough food,” began cooking and learning how to prepare meals as a result of his insatiable hunger.

He was also influenced by the chef father of his best friend, who “sort of lived this rockstar lifestyle” with long hair and tattoos and “didn’t fit into my dad’s social group, where they all wore suits.” Curtis desired to be exactly like him.

After graduating from an all-boys high school, Stone pursued a Bachelor of Business before beginning his career as a chef. He then completed an apprenticeship at the Savoy Hotel in Melbourne at the age of 18.

After relocating to London, he began working for Britain’s most renowned chef, Marco Pierre White. White offered to “work for free to learn from the absolute best chefs” despite his “excellent reputation for being mad and working ridiculous hours.”

After one year of working in the Grill Room (Café Royal), he was appointed Chef de Partie at White’s new restaurant, Mirabelle. Six months later, Stone was promoted to Sous Chef at the same restaurant. In the same year, the restaurant acquired its first Michelin star.

One year later, White elevated Stone to Head Chef at one of his other London restaurants, Quo Vadis, where he was permitted to experiment with and include more Italian aspects into the cuisine. Stone quickly ascended the success ladder and became one of the country’s most well-known chefs due to his skills.

In addition, he is the author of several books, including Surfing the Menu: Two Chefs, One Journey: A Fresh Food Adventure, and Cooking With Curtis: Easy, every day, and Adventurous Recipes for the Home Cook.

He also owns the Los Angeles restaurant Maude, which he inaugurated on February 1, 2014, and the Hollywood eatery Gwen, which he named after his maternal grandmother.

He also co-owns a seaside restaurant with Princess Cruises called Shares. Stone prepares his meals according to a straightforward rule.

My cooking philosophy is to keep things simple and use only natural ingredients, as Mother Nature intended. On Wednesday, Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend will be available to stream on Netflix.
