In 2016, he returned to his alma college to serve as co-defensive coordinator until 2021. Malloe, 49, has been elevated to UCLA defensive coordinator by Chip Kelly. He is the fourth head coach in as many years for the Bruin. D’Anton Lynn, who was employed by USC, is replaced by the Hawaiian native. In the 35-22 victory against Boise State in the LA Bowl, Ikaika served as the interim defensive coordinator.
In 2023, the Bruins finished as a top-10 defense, allowing only 301.5 yards per game and 25 touchdowns. Chip Kelly praised his new defensive coordinator for his ability to develop NFL players as well as fine young men off the field. UCLA defensive coordinator Ikaika Malloe is from Hawaii and attended Kamehameha School before attending the University of Washington. Malloe was a football fanatic who adored the game. In high school, however, his stature held him back. As a sophomore, he was solely allowed to punt. His father, Kimo, was his main influence, and he was a varsity standout two years later.
He earned four varsity letters as a safety and outside linebacker before earning a sociology degree from the University of Washington in 1997. His coaching career began as the program coordinator at the University of Washington. In 2000, Malloe served as a graduate assistant coach for the Rose Bowl team.
Malloe worked as a program coordinator until 2000, when he was hired as a special teams coordinator at Western Illinois. He got into trouble with the NCAA in 2003 when he reported that he had tried to set up office pools for the NCAA basketball tournament. He attended Illinois for two years before going to UTEP in 2004.
Ikaika returned to Hawaii for a year as the special teams coordinator before moving on to Yale as the defensive coordinator. He attended Yale for three years before returning to Washington in 2016. Between Yale and Washington, Ikaika worked at Utah State and Portland State.
Malloe was the defensive line coach at Washington for three years before being promoted to co-defensive coordinator and then to co-defensive coordinator/outside linebackers in 2021. Malloe will join the UCLA Bruins as a linebacker coach and special teams coordinator in 2022.

The football coach, Ikaika Malloe, and his wife, Tara Malloe, have been together since their days at UW. Tara attended the University of Washington as well. The couple married on July 14, 2001, and the football coach wrote a sweet letter for their 21st wedding anniversary in 2022. In his office, Ikaika gave me a framed photo from 1997.
“This picture is in my office to remind me where we started,” he remarked in an email. From then (1997) to now appears to be a blur. I remember fantasizing about making her MINE like it was yesterday!”
Ikaia and Tara have two sons and two daughters. His son, Isaiah Malloe, is a defensive back at the University of Hawaii. According to 247Sports, Isaiah was a three-star recruit who redshirted in 2022. During his senior year at Kennedy Catholic High School, Isaiah set a single-season school record for tackles (165) and interceptions (8). He has also been chosen all-league defensive back and returner four times.
Jordan, Ikaika’s second child, has avoided the football field. Taylor Malloe, the coach’s eldest daughter, is engaged to Benjamin Gaoteote, and the couple announced last month that they were expecting a son in March. Ikaika and Tara also have a daughter named Sloane, who turned four last March 30.
