One of the league’s most influential general managers has hinted that he may resign as head coach of the Cleveland Guardians. In April, the Guardians finished their 2023 season with a three-game series against the Red Sox.
If the Red Sox ownership had been made aware of Francona’s impending retirement, they might have properly retired his uniform number in a ceremony on the field. When he arrived, the Red Sox hadn’t won a World Series in 86 years, so it was only appropriate that they honored him by retiring his uniform when he announced his retirement.
