24-year-old contestant Jeanine Zheng explained that she made the decision to join the Survivor season 43 group for two key reasons.
According to accounts in Parade, she said:
“There are two reasons I’ve come to visit you. I’m here to perform for my father, so that’s why I’m here first. He has realized his American dream.
His all-time favorite American reality television show has been Survivor. He could never have imagined himself on the program as a Chinese immigrant. But it’s amazing that I’m the first generation and his daughter to be a part of the program right now.
She continued by talking more about the subject:
“[The second] is for me only. I feel like my entire life has been spent trying to live up to this ideal of a perfect person who isn’t actually me. I initially understood that I was chosen for who I am and for qualities that aren’t so robotic and high-achieving on Survivor.
I’m extremely happy to be able to come out here and play and demonstrate to my eight-year-old self that I am a capable winner as a socially sophisticated, imaginative, and amusing individual.
Zheng responded when asked what inspired her to compete:
Sincerely, I think that my entire life has prepared me for this game. I have extensive outdoor knowledge from my time leading Harvard students on hikes. I also find that I am really interested in and like hearing other people’s stories on a regular basis.
So I suppose that’s just something I do every day… However, I think a sequence of seemingly unrelated incidents has led to this moment, and I am prepared to play this game.
