In the 1980s, while employed by Lockheed, John acquired a duplicate of the brain-computer virus and started creating virus-removal software.

In 1987, McAfee Associates, a maker of computer antivirus software, was established. 1992 saw its incorporation in Delaware, and 1994 saw McAfee’s resignation. John sold his remaining stock in the business two years after it went public.

Other companies owned by Mcafee include Tribal Voice, which developed PowWow, one of the first instant chat apps. Before Checkpoint Softwares’ 2003 purchase of Zone Labs, the company that developed firewall software, he invested in and joined the board of directors in the year 2000.

According to a New York Times article from August 2009, Mcafee’s wealth had decreased from a staggering $100 million to just $4 million as a consequence of the financial crisis of 2007–2008’s effects on his investments.

He was interviewed in Belize that same year for the CNBC special “the bubble decade,” in which it was stated that he had invested in and built numerous mansions in the United States that remained unsold when the world economic downturn struck in 2007.
