The loss of the professional basketball player has deeply saddened NBA fans, who have expressed their heartfelt condolences to Eric Montross’ wife and family.
Eric Montross was lavished with love by his family, friends, admirers, and well-wishers while he was still alive. The former Toronto Raptors star and his wife, Laura Montross, enjoyed a long marriage and a close friendship. Eric Montross was born into an athletic family on September 23, 1971, in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.
His athletic journey began at Lawrence North High School, where he showed exceptional talent. Later, he enrolled at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill to join the Tar Heels. Furthermore, as a junior and senior, Montross was selected an All-American and helped UNC win the NCAA Championship against Michigan in 1993.
Later, the Boston Celtics selected him ninth overall in the 1994 NBA Draft. He has previously played for the Boston Celtics, New Jersey Nets, Dallas Mavericks, Philadelphia 76ers, Toronto Raptors, and Detroit Pistons. Unfortunately, Eric Montross passed away on December 17, 2023, at the age of 52, leaving his wife and children alone.

Lauren Montross Eric, a well-known player and colour commentator, was married to his wife, Laura Montross, for many years. The couple married in 1994 and has been together for more than three decades. Eric’s job required her to relocate to Boston, Dallas, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Detroit, and Toronto following their wedding.
Before marrying Eric, her name was Laura Leonard. Laura Montross, a Lexington, North Carolina native, talks with a mild Southern accent. Despite her incredible background, her date of birth is unknown, leaving everyone guessing her age. However, it is known that she graduated from UNC in 1993.
Despite her and her husband’s great impact, she remains quite grounded and down-to-earth. Professionally, she co-founded Raise a Racquet, an annual tennis fundraiser for UNC Children’s Hospital hosted at The FARM. She also co-founded the Frank Porter Graham Elementary School Arts in Action programme. Laura is now on the boards of directors for Be Loud! and the UNC Children’s Hospital Board of Visitors.
What was Eric’s cause of death?
Eric Montross’ relatives claimed that he died on December 17, surrounded by loved ones in his Chapel Hill home. Furthermore, UNC basketball confirmed his death the following morning. The Montross family announced in late March 2023 that Eric had been diagnosed with cancer. The former athlete received professional care at UNC’s Lineberger Cancer Centre.
However, while undergoing cancer treatment, he was unable to survive for an extended period and died. His family commended the medical community, particularly those at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Centre, for their unflinching support during his battle.
Furthermore, his family expressed gratitude for the incredible support and overwhelming affection shown by so many people while he suffered with his usual grit and grace. The Montross family also requested privacy during this difficult time. Carolina Athletics characterised him as a man of faith, a great parent, husband, and son, and one of the most well-known University and Chapel Hill representatives.
