Linda Plentl: Who Is She?

Linda Plentl is the daughter of Hughie Green, who was a living legend of British television and one of the most important figures in the business, anchoring the immensely popular program Opportunity Knocks. Claire Wilson and Hughie Green raised their two children, Linda and Christopher, and lived in a fifth-floor flat on Baker Street in London.

Green and Montreal socialite Claire Wilson met while they were both teenagers on a vacation ship in the midst of the 1930s. They married in 1942 and lived in Montreal before coming to London in 1947.

Green’s children, on the other hand, regarded it as “very dysfunctional” owing to his various relationships and self-obsession, which included extravagant trips and spending Christmas alone on a regular basis.

Green’s affair with Gwen Claremont led to their divorce in March 1975, after they had separated in 1961. Claire subsequently married Upstairs, Downstairs actor David Langton. Hughie Green, Most Sincerly, his biographical film, shows him as a family man, although Hughie Green’s daughter maintains the opposite is true.

She recalls a family trip spent in the pouring rain on the Thames on a dirty, leaky houseboat. After mooring the boat to a bridge in Maidenhead, he abandoned Linda, her brother, and Claire.

Hughie Green, a mother of four in her late seventies who has been married twice, enjoys a secure and joyful family life. She recalls Hughie not spending much time with his children and being able to frighten them without ever lifting a finger.

Before Yates’s death in 1999, Paula Yates, Hughie Green’s daughter with Elaine Smith, and Plentl had three meetings. Following Paula’s husband’s death, a DNA test revealed that Green was her biological father.

Biography of TV host Hughie Green

Hugh Aitchison Green was born in Marylebone, London, to a Scottish father called Hugh Aitchison Green, a former British Army officer from Glasgow who made money by selling canned fish to the military, and an English mother named Violet Elenore from Survey, a gardener’s daughter from Ireland.

The children lived in the family’s Meopham, Kent, home with their mother, who had various partners, while their father did business and often slept at the Savoy Hotel.

Green attended Arnold House School in the Westminster area of St. John’s Wood, Greater London. After the family company went bankrupt, Green’s father pushed his stage-obsessed son into acting, and by the age of 14, Hughie Green had his own BBC Radio show.

He then worked in the aviation industry as a stunt pilot and ferry transport pilot. After returning to London in 1947, he began working in business, including selling aircraft. He came to prominence in 1955 as a result of the ITV quiz show Double Your Money, which had originated on Radio Luxembourg a few years previously.

Green was brought to the Royal Marsden Hospital in Chelsea, London, after being diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. Green had smoked a pipe his whole life, drank a lot of beer, and had just recently begun taking recreational barbiturates. The cancer had spread to his lungs by 1997. Green died at a hospital on Saturday, May 3, 1997. Green’s son, Christopher Green, postponed his marriage and went from Canada to be at his dying father’s bedside.
