McKayla Stacey, 17, of Andover, Kansas, will appear in the season 21 episode, which will air this Sunday. According to the performer, her father, Phil Stacey, inspired her to pursue singing. McKayla stated in a recent audio interview with 101.3 KFDI that she has been performing since middle school because she comes from a musical family. She claimed that her father traveled with a band as a country performer and that this influenced her early interest in singing.
McKayla’s favorite judge is still Lionel Richie, and she was motivated to give the audition because it was ABC’s sixth installment of the iconic reality television franchise, which somehow connected with McKayla’s father Phil’s journey in season 6 of the show, back when it aired on FOX.
American Idol originally aired on FOX from 2002 to 2016, then paused for two years before returning in 2018. Following a two-year hiatus, the show will return in 2023 for its sixth season. McKayla performed Alone by Heart, a 1987 rock classic, via Zoom for her audition. The situation between Phil and McKayla is unusual. Phil’s daughter McKayla was born in the summer of 2006, while he was in Memphis for a tryout for season 6 of American Idol.
Phil sang live renditions of My Sweetheart and Let’s Get It On. After a brief debate, former judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson voted in his favor, while Simon Cowell abstained. The American Idol cameras followed him as he saw little McKayla for the first time at the end of the show’s final segment. In Season 6, Phil made it to the show’s Final Six. McKayla is now auditioning for season 21 after developing her own talent.
McKayla expressed her father’s delight, but she is concerned for her daughter. She stated that it has been difficult to maintain confidentiality among her colleagues and family members, and she is now looking forward to the program airing on Sunday so that everyone can discuss it.

Following the Las Vegas, New Orleans, and Nashville auditions, evaluators Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie will decide who will compete in Hollywood Week and other tasks. The next episode of American Idol season 21 will air on ABC on February 26, 2023, at 8 p.m. ET.
