Pakistani-Scottish politician Humza Yousaf became Scotland’s first Muslim and person of color Justice Secretary. Glasgow native and first-generation Pakistani immigrant Humza Yousaf is Scotland’s next first minister. Since 2011, Glasgow Pollok-born Yousaf has represented the Scottish Parliament.
Humza has always championed social justice, equality, and diversity in Scottish politics. Yousaf initially became a Glasgow region list MSP in 2011. He was one of seven regional (list) MSPs representing Scotland’s eight parliamentary regions.

Mian Muzaffar Yousaf, Humza’s father, moved to Scotland from Punjab’s Mian Channu in the 1960s. Pakistani Yousaf and his father Muzaffar migrated to Glasgow. In Clydebank, his grandpa worked for Singer Sewing Machines, and Yousaf proclaimed his candidacy. His paternal grandpa worked at a Singer sewing machine plant in industrial Clydebank when his family came to Scotland.
Yousaf said his parents wanted him to be a lawyer, pharmacist, dentist, accountant, or doctor. He said Asian parents expected their children to work in one of those fields. Muzaffar, an accountant, was unhappy when Yousaf said the law was his probable major since he was awful at science and decent at arithmetic.

Shaaista Bhutta, Yousaf’s mother, migrated from Kenya to Scotland in the 1960s. Pakistani-born Shaaista Bhutta is Humza Yousaf’s mother. Shaaista Bhutta shaped Humza Yousaf’s political career. He said his mother’s nursing profession encouraged him to work in public service.
Yousaf has championed Scotland’s NHS and boosted the healthcare and social services budget. Yousaf studied Politics and Scottish Literature at Glasgow University, inspired by his parents.
