The TV star decided to travel the world after getting her bachelor’s degree in Earth and Atmospheric Science and packing a rucksack with all she owned. She moved right away to Sydney, Australia, where she completed her graduate studies in media production. In Sydney, Australia, Oakes started her radio career as a morning host, where she covered news, weather, and current events.
She continued her broadcasting profession as the CBC North meteorologist after moving back to Canada. After more than a year of service with CBC North, the weather anchor moved over to CTV News.
