He succeeded Valli Moosa as the UDF regional secretary for Southern Transvaal two years later. This indicates that Mashatile was a political activist against apartheid and was highly valued inside the UDF to be given such a significant position.

From 2004 until 2009, he served as the MEC (Member of Executive Council) for Gauteng’s arts, culture, science, and technology sector.
