Rosemarie Fritzl was born on September 23, 1939, in Vienna, under the sign of Libra. Aside from her sister, Christine Renner, whose identity was revealed during her ex-prosecution, no other members of her husband’s family have been revealed to the media or the general public. As a result, her parents’ identities and occupations are unknown to the general public.
Rosemarie, who has spent her entire life in Austria, met and married her now-divorced husband, Josef Fritzl, when she was only 17 and he was 21. Rosemarie’s marriage was fraught with complications because she was marrying a sadist, unbeknownst to her. Her ex-husband was described as cruel, deceptive, and difficult to her and their children. Rosemarie went on to say that the man had her under control and would take any opportunity to publicly shame her.

The couple had seven children, two sons, and five daughters. Rosemarie and Josef Fritzl’s first child, Ulrike Fritzl, was born in 1957, in the order of their pregnancies. Ulrike is now a teacher. Following the birth of their first daughter, the couple welcomed a second child, a girl named Rosemarie. In 1960, Rosemarie Fritzl Jr. was born.
Three years later, in 1963, Rosemarie and her then-husband welcomed their third child, a boy. The boy’s name was Harald Fritzl. It took them three years longer, in 1966, to have their fourth child, a third girl, and the reason for their celebrity. She was named Elisabeth Fritzl, and as readers will learn, she had a terrible experience as a member of the Fritzl family.
After Elisabeth, Rosemarie adopted another child and gave birth to twins, Josef Jr. Fritzl (2nd son) and Gabriele Fritzl (4th daughter), in 1971. Rosemarie gave birth to her seventh and final child, who also became the family’s fifth girl, a year after the twins. Doris Fritzl was born on February 14, 1972. The entire family lived together in their home in Amstetten, Austria.

Things were not going well at home for Rosemarie and her children, in addition to the constant maltreatment from the Fritzl household’s father, Josef. In reality, Elisabeth had fled her home in 1983, prior to her kidnapping, incarceration, and torment, due to the violence she had already begun to experience at the hands of her father.
Authorities apprehended her and returned her home, but that was just the start of her problems at the hands of a callous and wicked parent. Joseph Fritzl had found the perfect reason to deport Rosemarie’s daughter, Elisabeth.
He reasoned that if she had run away before, she would have no trouble doing so again, and so in 1984, just after Elisabeth, who was born on April 6, 1966, turned 18, she went missing again, but this time she was handcuffed and locked in the soundproof basement, unbeknownst to everyone except Josef.
Rosemarie’s first reaction was to notify authorities about her missing daughter. Following some investigation, Josef persuaded the police and his wife, Rosemarie, that Elisabeth had fled a second time to join a sect. The callous Josef forced Elisabeth to compose notes that would strengthen the textiles of the false stories he had spun in order to strengthen the fabric of the false stories he had spun.
Elisabeth would spend the next 24 years as a prisoner in her own home, and as a sex slave to her own father to make matters worse. Elisabeth gave birth to seven children during her 24-year incarceration, though she was only left with six after one of her boys died a few days after birth. Josef burned the body in the cellar furnace.
Rosemarie, who was already terrified of her husband, was forced to believe his version of events, despite the fact that she was forbidden from entering the cellar for any reason. She was forced to raise three of Elisabeth’s children as her own after Josef persuaded her with yet another false letter from Elisabeth verifying her failure to care for the children on her own.

Josef Fritzl’s downfall is said to have begun when he agreed to transport their oldest daughter, Kerstein, to the hospital after she became ill and became comatose. In an attempt to make it appear as if Elisabeth had left the daughter with a message, Josef provided a forged letter from Elisabeth detailing the ill child’s medical history. The note was discovered to be fake by hospital doctors, who summoned officials, who were forced to reopen Elisabeth’s missing person file.
Further investigation revealed that no such group existed, and Josef was eventually apprehended when he took Elisabeth and her other two surviving children to see her critically ill daughter at the hospital. When the authorities arrived, they were informed of Elisabeth’s appearance in the infirmary.
They arrested the father and daughter, and after police assured Elisabeth that she and her children were safe, she opened up about her heinous 24-year ordeal. Josef was apprehended on April 26, 2008, and charged with fraudulent detention, rape, incest, and death by neglect. The vile rapist’s father pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced to life in prison in March 2009.
Rosemarie’s reaction, like that of every other member of the family, was one of total awe and wonder at what had happened right in front of her eyes. The police were obligated to investigate Rosemarie as a potential collaborator following the arrest of her then-husband, but they discovered that Josef Fritzl had also neglected and tortured her.
A few years after the trial, Josef and she divorced
Given the trauma Josef had caused the family, Rosemarie’s continued visits to him after he was imprisoned is an amazing testament to his psychic grip on her. During this time, however, she was also receiving intensive treatment from members of her family, including Elisabeth.
During the course of this treatment, jail visits became increasingly rare, eventually ceasing entirely by 2012. Rosemarie and her eccentric ex-husband divorced in 2012. She even changed her identity to protect her privacy and security.
Rosemarie Fritzl now lives on her own in Austria
Since the dust settled, Rosemarie, who goes by a different name, has been living alone in an apartment in Linz, Austria. To make ends meet, the 83-year-old, who is still reeling from the financial fallout from the Fritzl family scandal, sells sketches and handmade items she creates.
While it’s easy to say Rosemarie should have known better and done more to limit her ex-abuses, the public should remember that she was a victim of one of history’s cruelest men and give her some leeway.
