He started wrestling professionally in 1984 in South Carolina, and in the CWF (Championship Wrestling Florida), he wrestled for the NWA (National Wrestling Alliance).
He was signed to the AWA (American Wrestling Association) organization in 1985 after they took notice of him. In 1987, he participated in the NJPW (New Japan Pro-Wrestling) league. About one year before AWA went bankrupt, he left the business in 1989 to join NWA.
He participated in a vignette and a house show in June of the same year as a part of the NWA’s new program to develop fresh talent. In July, he debuted in professional wrestling for WCW.
