Willie Simmons and his wife, Shaia Rene Beckwith, are the parents of six children: two boys and four girls. According to the former Florida A&M head coach, his wife is the “head coach of the head coach.”
Willie Simmons was born on October 12, 1980, in Tallahassee, Florida. In college, he played quarterback for Clemson University and The Citadel. In 2005, Simmons began coaching at Lincoln High School. His passion and experience drove him back to his alma mater, Clemson University, where he served as a graduate assistant coach after only one season at Lincoln High School.
Following that, he expanded his coaching expertise by working at Middle Tennessee from 2007 to 2011, and then at Alcorn State from 2012 to 2014. From 2014 until 2017, Simmons was the head coach at Prairie View A&M. His leadership journey continued when he was named head coach at Florida A&M from 2018 to 2023. He is now the Duke University running backs coach.

Willie Simmons is married to Shaia Rene Beckwith, a native of Quincy, Fla., and a graduate of Florida A&M University. Six children were born from the marriage: males Louis III and Wraylon, as well as daughters Amerie, Raven, Shailoh, and Truth. Willie Simmons Leaves Florida A&M After a Six-Year Tenure
Willie Simmons, the Head Coach of Florida A&M football, has decided to retire after a successful six-year tenure. Simmons has officially quit and will become the running backs coach at Duke University. Meanwhile, the Rattlers’ Cornerbacks Coach, James Colzie III, will take over as head coach.
Simmons’ extraordinary tenure in Florida’s capital city ended with a record of 45 wins and 13 losses. He expressed his gratitude to the FAMU administration. Simmons conveyed his heartfelt appreciation to former and current coaching and support staff, emphasizing the unique connections and valued memories he made throughout his career.
FAMU President Dr. Larry Robinson also praised Simmons’ influential leadership. He lauded Simmons for bringing the football team to tremendous heights, including the 2023 Celebration Bowl victory over Howard University.
