To win every title in every weight class, Thomas Hearns fought well-known competitors including Wilfred Benitez, Roberto Duran, Virgil Hills, and Pipino Cuevas.
Thomas Hearns had a successful start to his career by triumphing in every match. Thomas brought a 28-0 record into his match against Pipino Cuevas of Mexico. With just one TKO from Thomas in the second round, Pipino Cuevas’ reign of terror in boxing came to an end. Thomas received The Ring Magazine’s “Fighter of the Year” honor in 1980.
He, the WBA champion, faced Sugar Ray Leonard (WBC Champion). Thomas was defeated by Ray Leonard in the fourteenth round of the fight. The twelfth round saw Ray Leonard throwing against the ropes. A stumbler named Thomas was awoken by the bell’s ringing and saved. Ray then pinned him against the ropes after landing another body and head combo. The march came to an end when the game was ruled over.
Thomas put on weight and captured the WBC Super Welterweight title (154 lb). He faced off against challengers like Mark Medal (TKO), Roberto Duran (TKO), and European champion Luigi Minchillo in 1982 to defend his title.
During his reign of terror in the weight class, Thomas knocked out Roberto Duran in just two rounds, becoming the first boxer to accomplish it. Thomas Hearns experienced great success, earning the title of “Fighter of the Year” from the ring magazine.
In order to unseat Marvin Hagler as the middleweight champion, Thomas decided to move up into the weight class while still holding the super welterweight title.
Hagler’s hand was hurt during the fight, and Thomas was able to rip a sizable gash in his head. When the opening began to bleed, the referee temporarily paused the game. As the game progressed, every participant gave it their all in an effort to win.
Hearns had to move in a lateral fashion due to a broken right hand, but this tactic worked only in the first and second rounds. Hearns was knocked out in the third round by Hagler, who had him on the ropes. To Hagler, Hearns fell short. Consequently, there was little hope that he would triumph in the march.
James “Black Gold” Shuler, a rising star who had suffered a devastating knockout (KO) in the fight’s opening round, was promptly released by Thomas in 1986 as restitution for his misconduct.
Shuler was killed in a motorcycle accident a week after they argued. During the funeral, Thomas gave the NABF title belt to the Shunner family, explaining that Shiner deserved to keep it because he had won it several times.
