He is the director of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Office in New York, and pro-Israeli organizations have sometimes criticized him for comments he made on social media.
His assertions that Israel engages in apartheid and his support of the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement on social media garnered negative attention; he reaffirmed these points in his retirement letter.

Craig Mokhiber resigned; why? Claiming that the US, UK, and most of Europe were “wholly complicit in the horrific assault,” the director of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights’ New York office resigned and accused the UN of “failing” in its duty to stop what he called the genocide of Palestinian civilians in Gaza under Israeli bombardment.
Craig Mokhiber wrote to Volker Turk, the UN high commissioner in Geneva, on October 28, letting him know that this would be the last letter he would be sending while he was still employed in New York.
Mokhiber, who was stepping down after reaching retirement age, wrote, “Once again, we are seeing a genocide unfolding before our eyes, and the organization we serve appears powerless to stop it.”
Citing the UN’s previous inability to halt genocides against the Tutsis in Rwanda, Muslims in Bosnia, Yazidi in Iraqi Kurdistan, and Rohingya in Myanmar, he remarked, “High Commissioner, we are failing again.”
