Why Penn Badgley Is Willing To Accept Joe Goldberg

Joe Goldberg

Joe Goldberg, the most notorious fictional killer on Netflix, is returning, but with a twist. For the fourth season of the suspense series, he has relocated to London, obtained a position as a literature professor, and infiltrated a network of extremely rich pals.

London may be new to Joe, but not to Penn Badgley, the renowned voice actor for Joe’s scary voiceovers.

“I wasn’t able to spend as much time with my family as I would have liked,” he tells BBC Newsbeat about last year’s filming.

“Aside from that, it was a wonderful moment; I recall it with such fondness. I adore some aspects of the culture there.

My wife is British; she was born and reared there until she was a teenager, therefore I thoroughly enjoyed my time there.

So Penn enjoyed his time in the United Kingdom, but what about his renowned character?

“I think in some ways he has settled in fairly well, except for the fact that he is Joe Goldberg and cannot settle anywhere well,” he says.

“[London] is the source of Joe’s dreams about how people should be, as well as the literature he adores.

“He’s attempting to make a go of it, and at the beginning, you can tell that he’s doing an adequate job.

Obviously, by the end of the first episode, it becomes clear that this is not the case.

This series also features the entrance of British performers, including new love interest Charlotte Ritchie and EastEnders alumna Tilly Keeper, who portrays a renowned It girl.

Tati Gabrielle returns as Marienne, another of Joe’s exes – yep, he has had plenty.

Tilly adds,

“When I learned that he was coming to London, I was ecstatic.”

“I think it fits in perfectly with this season’s vibe of dark academia,” the speaker said.

Joe has always been a contentious figure

Concerns have been raised that the show glorifies stalking and violence against women by men.

Penn has spoken at length about how much he dislikes Joe, and there are even YouTube compilations of his interviews in which he criticizes the character.

Penn clarifies to Newsbeat that he does not “hate” Joe, but that he finds it exhausting to portray the character.

“Playing him for so long requires a great deal of emotional, spiritual, and physical stamina,” he explains.

“Because he is such an unreliable narrator and his manic behavior is inconsistent. He is consistently unpredictable.

“However, I believe I embrace him more than ever, as I believe hating him would need even more energy, which I do not wish to give him.”

Penn may be tired of Joe’s pranks, but there is no indication that this is the final season.

This is a question for the authors. I believe the question is whether there is another season.

I do not wish to reveal whether or not this is conceivable to individuals who have not yet viewed the film.
