The widow of television personality Harry Gration stated that nothing “prepare[d]” her for his untimely demise last year. On June 24, the former presenter of BBC Yorkshire’s Look North news program passed away unexpectedly at the age of 71.
Helen Gration told BBC Radio Leeds that anyone who has experienced the “unexpected death” of a loved one will understand how devastating it can be.
The family has just published an audio recording of her husband’s final performance.
One and Only One Ten weeks before his death, he performed at York’s Theatre Royal alongside former ITV Calendar host Christine Talbot.
She stated that releasing the recording was part of preserving her husband’s legacy, particularly for the couple’s three sons, the youngest of whom is three years old.
Helen stated,
“I would like to ensure that there is a summary available and a great location to go if, in the future, people want to hear and be reminded of the stories Harry used to tell us around the table.”
She stated that listening to the recording, which is accessible on YouTube and as a podcast, was emotional.
She remarked,
“It is incredibly difficult, and although other people may have experienced a similar tragedy, a devastating unexpected death will impact you in ways for which you were unprepared.”
In 1978, Harry Gration joined the BBC, and in 1982, he joined Look North. In 2020, he performed his final performance.
Also, In 2013, he was granted MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for his accomplishments.
Helen stated that he was quite modest about the public’s admiration for him.
She said that the respect he offered others and his ability to make a tale relevant was “great gifts.”
“I cannot recall a time when we went out, say for supper, without someone wanting to speak with him or take a picture,” she stated.
Helen stated that it was sometimes difficult to deal with memories, but that she considered her family to be quite fortunate.
“Because we have so much, and at some point when it isn’t quite so raw and it doesn’t sting as much,” she added, “the boys will be able to look back on some incredible memories.”
