Will Smith, who took home the Oscar for best actor the previous year, will star in the upcoming slavery drama Emancipation, published later this year.
After Will Smith smacked host Chris Rock during the March MTV Movie & TV Awards ceremony, there were rumors that Apple Film would push back its release date until 2023.
However, it will now be released in theaters on December 2, and it will be available to stream beginning a week later; this will make it eligible for the Oscars in the following year.
However, Smith is not allowed for the next ten years.
In addition to this, he gave his resignation from the Academy, and he has now sent an apology to the comedian Rock, who had made a joke about Smith’s wife, telling Rock that he is “available whenever you need to chat.” Smith has also distanced himself from Rock.
The historical figure “Whipped Peter,” who joined the Union Army in the 1860s after fleeing slavery in Louisiana, serves as the inspiration for the film “Emancipation.”
Photographs of his whipping wounds, taken while a doctor was examining him, were later made public as part of an effort to discredit the institution of slavery.
In addition to Kevin Smith’s victory for his most recent feature, King Richard, the 89th Annual Academy Awards saw Apple become the first streaming service to win the best picture with their film Coda.
