Authorities announced the arrest of a suspect in the killing of a pedestrian named William Bell on Tuesday, December 27. On Friday, December 23, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jasmane Stephenson on suspicion of vehicular murder.
The driver of the Kia that struck and pulled Bell’s corpse to a parking lot was identified as Jasmine Stephenson, 33, of Hephzibah. She was charged with vehicular murder and fleeing the scene of a fatal collision.
The accident reports from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office described how the event occurred. According to deputies, Bell was hit at 11:23 p.m. on Wednesday while walking east over Deans Bridge near Brentway Drive. Because of the rain, the driver said he did not see Bell cross the street, and the front of his car collided with the guy, who fell on the road.
Then Stephenson’s northbound Kia Optima struck him and pulled him north on Deans Bridge. Stephenson said that she saw something on the road, ran over it, and proceeded on her way. She came to a halt at 2507 Milledgeville Road, when an assistant coroner removed Bell’s corpse from the car at 2:27 a.m. Stephenson was cited for leaving the scene of an accident. The driver of the first car stayed at the site.
