Career
Edge published nearly 100 papers, and his mastery of the subject places him alongside Coxeter as one of the twentieth century’s leading geometers. His work continued the work of the great geometers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, particularly Castelnuovo, Cayley, Clebsch, Cremona, Fano, Fricke, Humbert, Klein, Plücker, and Schläfli. Georges Humbert discovered a genus 5 plane sextic curve with five cusps for singular points. These have intriguing geometrical properties, which Edge investigated in a 40-year series of papers. Castelnuovo investigated and classified algebraic surfaces with hyperelliptic prime sections in 1890. Edge carried on and finished Castelnuovo’s investigations. Castelnuovo demonstrated that a non-ruled surface with genus 2 prime sections is the projection of a non-singular rational surface with order 12 in projective 11-space. In a paper on Castelnuovo’s normal surface, Edge explicitly examined one such projection.
