Career
Despite being a practicing dentist, Rollins also had a medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He spent a significant amount of his free time after work studying the newly discovered X-rays. Rollins had a natural fear of these powerful penetrating rays. They were referred to as X-light by him.
For three years, William worked as an apprentice to Dr. Kidder of Lawrence. He then entered Harvard University’s School of Dentistry, where he earned his D.M.D. in 1873, at the age of 21. Rollins was described by a member of the faculty as “one of the brightest men who has ever graduated from the Dental School at Harvard.”
Rollins created a number of pioneering dental instruments in his workshop, improving on others that were already in use. He invented a rheostat with hundreds of steps for the purpose of causing anesthesia by electricity, as well as a rheostat that was continuously variable, depending on the effect of light on the electrical conductivity of selenium.
