Willie Spence, the runner-up in season 19 of American Idol, died in an automobile accident on October 11, 2022. Spence’s Jeep Cherokee collided with a tractor-trailer that was stopped on a Tennessee highway shoulder. Spence’s family on American Idol issued the following statement:
“We are heartbroken to learn of the death of our beloved American Idol family member, Willie Spence.”
He was a great artist who brightened every room he entered and will be sorely missed. We extend our condolences to his family.” Spence’s family has yet to react to his death.
Spence was believed to sing like his Mother
Willie Spence was born in West Palm Beach, Florida on June 18, 1999, to Willie Spence Sr. and Sharon Spence. The late singer was raised in Douglas, Georgia.
Willie was described as a miraculous baby by WALB News 10 after doctors told Sharon she couldn’t conceive. Sharon and Spence Sr. referred to their son as Miracle Man or M&M at home.
Sharon informed the newspaper that she sang to Willie when he was still in the womb.
“We love you, M&M,” Sharon added.
“Mommy and daddy adore you, sweet M&M.”
I sung during my pregnancy, and thereafter, he took over.”
Spence grew up in a musical family: his father, Spence Sr., plays the guitar, and his mother, Sharon, sings. Sharon showed her son how to command the stage when he was performing. She stated:
“And I’d tell Willie to use your hands more, walk a little bit, M&M, walk back, you know certain things I’d say, and those things were coming out [on stage] while he was singing, and it made me feel good.”
People who had seen her perform believed Spencer sang just like her.
“When I got home, a lot of people said, ‘Sharon, that boy on that stage looks like you,'” Sharon told WALB News 10.
“He remarked, ‘You do your hands that way, and he does his hands that way.'”
