Rashad Maleek Trice, a 26-year-old Detroit resident, was formally accused on Wednesday of kidnapping 2-year-old Wynter Smith.
Trice is accused of several offenses, including first-degree home invasion, two counts of first-degree criminal sexual behavior, and assault with intent to kill.
Trice, the habitual fourth offender, has also been detained on charges of felony assault, aggravated domestic violence (second offense), and illegal confinement.
Wynter Smith, a 2-year-old who had been reported missing, was found dead in Detroit three days after his kidnapping in Lansing, according to the police.

He characterized Wynter as a loving, trustworthy, and expressive youngster in an interview with CBS News Detroit.
Shortly after Wynter was abducted, Smith received a call from his wife informing him of their daughter’s absence.
After the call, AJ, who is a student in Tennessee, raced back to Michigan. Fortunately, Symari received medical care and was safely released.
AJ Smith revealed that although she can talk and walk and is otherwise doing well, she is nonetheless understandably anxious.
When Lansing police arrived at the scene of the initial 911 call on Sunday evening, they found Wynter’s mother suffering from several stab wounds.
Rashad Trice, the suspect, reportedly gave the police no information on Wynter’s whereabouts in the days after the crime.
