To relieve his wife of the burden of raising their twin sons with autism, Xavier Yap Jung Houn strangled the boys in a covered canal close to his house. Tuesday, August 15, saw Yap, 50, get a 14-year sentence after entering a guilty plea to two charges of culpable homicide that did not amount to murder. In 2017, Ethan and Aston Yap, Xavier’s 11-year-old children, were given a global development delay diagnosis after testing positive for autism spectrum disorder.

Mr. Yap E Chern Ethan and Mr. Yap Kai Shern Aston’s real parents were Xavier Yap Jung Houn and Anna Seah. The twins were officially diagnosed with ASD and GDD on May 29, 2017, when they were six years old. The twins’ mother, Anna Seah, resisted the pressure to enroll them in a specific education school. Rather, when they were still nonverbal, she enrolled them in a regular school.
Yap was very close to his sons, and he often helped them prepare their daily meals and buy everything they wanted. When Yap discovered that Ms. Seah was constantly angry with the boys, Xavier started to worry. Yap got an ice pick and started having suicidal thoughts.
What Happened To Xavier Yap Jung Houn Sons?
At the beginning of 2022, Yap noticed his wife was depressed and frustrated, so he started thinking about killing his sons and ending his life. The twins’ need to go through a suitability examination to continue attending their mainstream primary school made Anna feel this way. Yap thought killing their sons would solve his wife’s difficulties because she had given up on their sons.
He was also worried that if he and his wife passed away, no one would be left to care for the boys. Yap chose to execute his plan at Greenridge Crescent Playground, a peaceful location close to the family’s house in the Upper Bukit Timah district, which has a sizable open field and woodland nearby.
Using the ice pick he’d bought earlier in the afternoon on January 21, 2022, Yap drove his sons to the playground. Moreover, Yap walked his sons to an open field and brought each one of them into a nearby canal after they had played for around ten minutes. Yap then led them to a portion of the canal that was covered, where he struck Ethan’s neck with a stick before it broke.
Xavier Yap Jung Houn Charged With Homicide
Yap decided to put his forearm over his son’s neck and apply pressure to choke Ethan in front of him. Ethan struggled to stand but eventually stopped, and Yap laid him down on the ground. Yap turned to face Aston, his other son, who was standing a few meters away in silence. Xavier Yap tried to mimic his move with Aston but lacked the strength, and they fell together.
Yap leaped on top of Aston while he was on the ground, strangling him. Aston protested as Yap kept putting pressure on his neck until he became motionless. Yap checked to make sure the guys were dead by turning their bodies over so their faces were immersed in the canal water while they were immobilized.
Nonetheless, the results of the autopsy performed by renowned forensic pathologist Dr. George Paul verified that the boys’ deaths were caused by strangulation. Yap attempted but was unable, to end his life after killing his boys by stabbing himself in the stomach, chest, and back with an ice pick. Then, in an attempt to inflict a brain injury, he chose to strike his head with a tree branch and a rock the size of a fist, but this too failed.
