Kotto’s professional career began at the age of 19 when he made his professional debut in Othello. Soon after, he began acting on Broadway, where he appeared in many musicals, including Great White Hope. He made his cinematic debut at the age of 23 in the film 4 for Texas and a supporting role in the caper picture The Thomas Crown Affair in 1963. Then, in 1973, he was spotted on the set of Live and Let Die, playing Mr. Big, a James Bond villain. He went on to appear in films such as Across 110th Street, Truck Turner, and Raid on Entebbe for television. In 1983, Kotto made his screen debut as an autoworker in the 1978 film Blue Collar, and the following year, he starred as Parker in the science-fiction picture Alien, for which he gained widespread acclaim.
Around the same time, he guest-starred in an episode of The A-Team and performed a supporting role in the 1980 drama Brubaker. Other significant works by Kotto include The Running Man and the action-comedy Midnight Run, both of which starred Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin.
