Born on October 4, 1993, in Hyesan, Ryang gang, North Korea, to parents Jin Sik and Byeon Keun Sook, Yeonmi Park is an activist and defector.

Conversely, her father worked with the government and was imprisoned for smuggling. Her mother is employed by the North Korean military as a nurse.

Park’s father was found guilty in a 2004 court case and sentenced to hard labor at the Chungsan reeducation camp.

Following that, the Park sisters’ living situation worsened and they were forced to stop going to school because of her father’s dismissal from the Workers’ Party of Korea and their lack of money.

They relocated to Park’s mother’s hometown of Kowon in 2003, leaving her to live with her aunt in Song Nam-Ri in the meantime.

In 2005, her mother had been imprisoned for a month for moving her residence without authorization, but her father had been unjustly freed from jail on sick leave after giving the warden a substantial payment.

After they were reunited, Park’s father urged the family to start planning their getaway to China.

Sadly, her elder sister Eunmi abruptly departed for China. Fearing they would be held accountable for Eunmi’s escape, Park and her family fled North Korea through China with the help of North Korean smugglers.

Chinese and Korean Christian missionaries helped them relocate to Mongolia, and South Korean authorities made it easier for the family to relocate to Seoul in 2009. Park subsequently began serving as a human rights advocate for North Korea full-time.
