Yvette was born in Houston, Texas, on August 27, 1961. She graduated in 1979 from Houston’s Sterling High School.
After graduating from high school, Adams attended Texas Southern University to get a Bachelor of Arts in journalism, which she did in 1985.
She began her career as a lead vocalist before switching to a full-time teaching position and a part-time modeling job.
As a lead vocalist with Houston’s Southeast Inspirational Choir, a group affiliated with the Church of God in Christ, the composer first came to the notice of Thomas Whitfield and Sound of Gospel Records.
