You Young began skating after watching Yuna Kim win the Winter Olympics in 2010. She was reared in Singapore, trained with numerous trainers, and participated in the Singapore National Figure Skating Championships from 2011 to 2013.

One of her trainers in 2012 was Zhang Wei, a former Chinese national ice dancer who won gold with partner Wang Rui at the 1999 Asian Winter Games. Her coach believes You have what it takes to one day become a global and Olympic champion.

You returned to South Korea with her mother in March 2013 on the advice of her coach to enhance her growth since the training atmosphere is superior.

In January 2016, she won gold in the 2016 South Korean Figure Skating Championships, becoming the country’s youngest-ever national champion at the age of 11, breaking Yuna Kim’s previous record of age 12 in 2003.

She also won gold in the Cup of Tyrol’s novice level in March. In November 2016, she placed second behind Alena Kanysheva of Russia in the Tallinn Trophy beginner level. Later, in January 2017, she came sixth in the 2017 South Korean Figure Skating Championships, owing mostly to a short program fall.

In 2016, she was named Rookie of the Year at the 21st Coca-Cola Sports Awards, as well as Best Newcomer at the Korean Skating Union Merit Player Award Ceremony, Sports Marketing Award Korea: Promising Female Athlete, and Most Valuable Player at the Gyeonggi Newspaper Sports Athlete Award. Similarly, she secured a spot in the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics as the first torch bearer in South Korea in 2017.
