In 2012, Zhizhen Zhang started playing tennis professionally in Chico, California, on the ITF Futures Tour. Despite losing to Jason Jung in his first match, he defeated Daniel Yoo in his first professional match at the Joplin Futures competition before losing to American Gonzales Austin, who wasn’t ranked.

Zhang took part in two more Futures competitions, however, she was eliminated both times in the opening round.

In the same year, he received a wild card admittance into the Shanghai Rolex Masters qualifying draw, where he lost to Brian Baker.

Before making his ITF Men’s Circuit debut in May 2013 at the USA F12 challenger, where he lost to Greg Ouellette, Zhang took a six-month break.

He participated in professional events sparingly, debuting on the ATP Challenger Tour for the first time at the 2013 Shanghai Challenger, and ending the year with just thirteen outings in senior-level competition, including one in the quarterfinals of a Futures tournament in Cyprus.

After failing to sustain consistent play in the opening months of the year, Zhizhen Zhang earned his debut ITF World Tennis Tour title in June 2015 at the Mont-de-Marsan Futures tournament.

Three weeks later, Zhang competed in his second final of the year in Bourg-en-Bresse, where he furthered his reputation as a formidable opponent on French soil. The 2015 ATP Challenger Tour competition for Zhang began after his triumph on the ITF Men’s Circuit.

Career Information

Despite his early difficulties, he made his ATP circuit debut at the 2015 Shenzhen Open, where he beat Ji Vesel before defeating Go Soeda in straight sets.

He also participated in the Beijing Open and Shanghai Masters qualifying rounds, however, he was unable to move on to those events’ main tournaments. Despite a few early defeats in Challenger tournaments as the year came to a close, his career had advanced significantly.

Zhizhen Zhang mysteriously skipped four months of the ATP World Tour in 2016, and upon his comeback, he had trouble keeping up his form on the ITF Men’s Circuit.

Despite competing in an ATP Challenger Tour event in 2016 and the qualifying draw of the ATP Tour 250 tournament in Nice, the Open de Nice, where he lost a third set tiebreaker to Daniil Medvedev in the second round of qualifying, Zhang failed to advance past the first or second round of every tournament he played in, except a Futures quarterfinal.

As a result, Zhang concluded the year outside the top 800, a dramatic loss of 400 ranking spots from the previous year.

Zhang made major strides in his tennis career in 2017, taking home two Futures championships and finishing second in another. He also advanced as a qualifier to the ATP Tour match in Shenzhen’s quarterfinals, where he upset Paolo Lorenzi, the world No. 39.

Zhang advanced further in 2018; he made it to the semifinals of an ATP Challenger tournament and peaked at position 223 in July. He had to withdraw from the Shenzhen Open match against Andy Murray because of health issues.

Zhang and his friend Yibing Wu qualified for the main draw, making history for their nation. However, after losing to Tim van Rijthoven and failing to convert seven match points in the third set, Zhang just missed becoming the first Chinese male national to win a major main event match in 63 years.

His second ATP 500-level triumph came in the 2022 Astana Open, where he triumphed over Aslan Karatsev.

On 10 October 2022, Zhang set a new career-high ranking of No. 110, becoming the first Chinese male player in the Open era to do so.

He also beat sixth seed Sebastián Báez and Márton Fucsovics in straight sets to reach his first ATP Tour semifinal of the year and his first since Naples in 2017.

At the Mutua Madrid Open in 2023, Zhang Ze achieved significant career milestones. He defeated Jurij Rodionov in his maiden Master’s encounter before defeating Denis Shapovalov to advance to the third-round master’sster’ competition for the first time.

To advance to the fourth round, he next overcame Cameron Norrie, the 11th seed and world No. 13.

As the first Chinese player to go to the quarterfinals of a Masters event, he overcame eighth seed Taylor Fritz after facing three match chances.

In the quarterfinals against Aslan Karatsev, Zhang finally lost in straight sets, but his extraordinary run allowed him to attain a career-high ranking and pave the way for Chinese tennis.
