Johnny was next cast as Mark McCain in the western series “The Rifleman” (1958-1963), alongside Chuck Connors and Paul Fix. The portrayal made him prominent in the United States and gained him a number of prizes, including a Primetime Emmy Award nomination; curiously, his brother and father also received an Emmy nomination for their work on the TV series “Laramie” that same year.

He then took a break from music until the early 1990s, when he became the head of the vintage dancing orchestra JCO. He and his bandmates were chosen to perform at the annual Art Directors Guild Awards show hosted at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, which was funded by the Playboy Jazz Festival. They have one studio album, “Sweepin’ the Clouds Away,” which was released on August 21, 2012.
