Hector Elizondo was born in New York City, New York, on December 22, 1936. Martin Echevarria Elizondo and Carmen Medina Reyes were his parents. Both of his parents were born in Puerto Rico and eventually immigrated to the United States, settling in New York City. Elizondo grew up on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and showed an early aptitude for music and sports.
Elizondo joined the Frank Murray Boys choir when he was ten years old. He succeeded in baseball and basketball at another school. He attended High School of the Performing Arts after finishing junior high school.
Elizondo later attended City College of New York to pursue a career as a history teacher. He did, however, drop out of college during his freshman year in order to support his family. Elizondo trained as an actor at Stella Adler Theatre Studio and as a dancer with the Balle Arts Company.

Hector Elizondo married Marie Rivera in 1956. He was still in his first year of college when he became a father. His marriage lasted only a year, and he later gained custody of his child. In 1965, Hector Elizondo made his stage debut in the play Kill the One-Eyed Man. In 1963, he made his film debut in The Fat Black Pussycat. He appeared in the 1974 film The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. In 1979, Elizondo appeared in the film Cuba. He went on to star in the film American Gigolo a year later. In the 1980s and 1990s, he appeared in films such as The Flamingo Kid, Private Resort, Pretty Woman, Frankie and Johnny, Beverly Hills Cop III, The Other Sister, and Runaway Bride. The actor played Joe in The Princess Diaries in 2001.
He later appeared as Bane in Batman: The Mysterious Case of the Batwoman. Other films in which he has appeared include The Celestine Prophecy, Music Within, Love in the Time of Cholera, and Music. Elizondo also appeared in the film New York Street Games. In 1967, Elizondo made his debut television appearance in The Edge of Night. He made his television debut in the series The Doctors in 1968. In 1971, the actor appeared in the television film The Impatient Heart. He was then seen in Popi as Abraham Rodriguez.
Elizondo went on to star in Freebie and the Bean. He appeared in the TV shows Casablanca, a.k.a. Pablo, Foley Square, Down and Out in Beverly Hills, The Burden of Proof, and Chicago Hope in the 1980s and 1990s. He’s also appeared in a number of TV movies, including Mrs. Cage, Borrowed Hearts, Safe House, and Kojak: Ariana. Throughout his career, he has provided voices for a variety of television shows. From 2011 to 2021, he played the main character Ed Alzate in Last Man Standing. Elizondo is now appearing in B Positive as Harry, a recurring character.
