PRE-CAREER BAND
While still in school, Akiko was interested in playing the drums and singing, so in 2005 she formed Pre (or often written with the capital letters – PRE), enlisting players from other London rock bands, Seafood, and Todd.
Along with Kevin Hendrix and Matt Warburton, who joined the band while also performing in Male Bonding, Akiko attracted a skilled guitarist, John Webb, and the veteran drummer Richard “Rodney” Bennett, who got his moniker from the famous composer of the same name.
The band recorded numerous songs, including “Dudefuk,” which was included on the Rough Trade Shop compilation CD “Counter Culture” in 2006. PRE also released the “Treasure Trails” EP, and their album “Epic Fits” was released in September 2007 on the Lovepump United Records and Skin Graft Records labels.
As of 2019, the band is still touring and playing noise rock music, with Akiko serving as the frontwoman singer and drummer. It was at PRE that Akiko learned to stage-dive and shock the crowd with her semi-nude looks; she later employed this odd image in her new projects, such as The Big Pink and Comanechi.
The Big Pink group
The Big Pink was founded in 2008 by original members Milo Cordell and Robertson “Robbie” Furze.
Following the successful release of their first single, “Too Young to Love,” in early 2009, the band drew a lot of interest, both from the audience and from their colleagues, who wanted to cooperate with the new creative duo.
The Big Pink received their Philip Hall Radar Award for “Best New Act” at the NME Shockwave Awards, and Akiko was invited as an additional person to record many singles with the band. She worked as a singer and drummer with Milo and Robbie before leaving to pursue her music.
The Comanechi band
When Akiko chose to stop performing with PRE, she founded the band in 2009. She met her Comanechi bandmate, Simon Petrovitch, at a barbecue party, and they hit it off right away because they both enjoy barbeque meals.
‘I’ve been obsessed with barbecues since I was a child, and Simon is the same.’ So we spoke about barbecues, and then we talked about music,’ Akiko recounts about their first meeting in a 2010 interview with The List.
Her inspiration for the band’s name came from a joke about a Romanian Olympic gymnast named Nadia Comaneci. Akiko recalled watching the Olympics when Nadia won her first gold medal at the age of 14, and how the audience was impressed by her dress, which was a little skimpy leotard.
This style inspired many jokes in Japan, and many people began using the expression ‘a bit Comaneci,’ which meant “very tight garments” or “nearly nude.” This joke had a lot to do with Akiko’s stage persona, as she continued to perform largely in her underpants.
When Charlie Heaton, the eventual father of their child with Akiko, joined the band as the drummer in 2013, the band produced a few songs, including “Death of You,” “My Pussy,” and “R.O.M.P,” which were later included on their first album “Crime of Love.
” The band began touring the United Kingdom, performing successfully in Cardiff, Edinburgh, and Glasgow, among other cities. The band performed in Toronto in September 2013, as well as at the Pop Montreal Festival.
As of 2019, Akiko is still the band’s frontwoman, largely touring the UK and collaborating with other noise rock bands including Divorce, Ell V Gore, and Big Lonely.
Several side projects
Akiko’s controversial stage persona made her one of the most sought-after collaborators in the UK rock band music scene.
She relished the attention, revealing that she didn’t want to be famous, but rather wanted to make wonderful music: ‘Playing in a band is incredibly fun at first, and everything that comes with it, like having a label or producing an album, comes afterward.
‘It’s sometimes just for fun. “I didn’t have a great desire, like, “I want to be super famous,” she admitted in a 2010 interview with The List.
Akiko is well-known for her clumsy hopping on stage, which involves the audience in the performance. Due to her love of stage-diving, she once severely wounded her face after landing on her nose.
Who exactly is Charlie Heaton?
Charlie Heaton was born in Bridlington, East Riding of Yorkshire, the UK on February 6, 1994.
After failing to achieve global popularity in the music industry, Charlie turned to act, obtaining his first role in the “DCI Banks” series in 2015 after only a year, which catapulted him to celebrity overnight.
His role as Jonathan Byers in the Netflix sensation “Stranger Things” allowed him to work with A-list celebs such as Golden Globe winner Winona Ryder, Golden Globe nominee David Harbour, and Sean Astin from “The Lord of the Rings.”
Charlie, who earns $150,000 per episode, has been cast in the fourth season of the fantasy horror drama, with Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, and Gaten Matarazzo. He was arrested at the Los Angeles airport, where he had arrived to attend the premiere of the second season of “Stranger Things.
