Tran Dong Lan, now known as Lana Therese Condor, was born in Vietnam on May 11th, 1997. When she was four months old, her Hungarian father and Irish mother adopted her. A different Vietnamese family also allowed Bob and Mary Condor to adopt their younger sister’s brother. Mary and Bob relocated to the US after completing the adoptions.
Therese’s parents made every effort to introduce Lana and her brother to their Vietnamese heritage. They had some challenges because Lana doesn’t eat meat, but overall they were successful in reuniting Lana with her Vietnamese background. According to Lana, who spoke to Teen Vogue, it baffles her why people think she didn’t have the “Asian-American” experience. She uttered:
“As for myself, I felt incredibly at ease and understood. It’s a common fallacy that because I didn’t grow up with Asian parents, I can’t relate to the quote-unquote “Asian-American experience.” And that’s simply untrue… My parents tried to force-feed me Vietnamese food and have always pushed me to learn about my heritage. Because I don’t eat meat, that was a little challenging for me.
Lana’s parents supported her in pursuing her love of performing
Lana owes a portion of her success in Hollywood to her parents, who encouraged her to pursue acting even though she didn’t want to. They signed her up for dance lessons, but she preferred acting. So, she told Anthem Magazine, “They’ve always been supportive of me performing in general. I participated in athletics and other activities, but I ultimately preferred the theater.
Although Condor’s parents desired Lana and her brother to finish school, they were amenable to the notion of Lana taking a year out to see if an acting career would be successful. She went on:
“Even though my parents are huge advocates for school, they told me, “You’re young and have a lot of time left. The college will always be available if you want to take a year off to pursue something you think you can achieve. I’m incredibly lucky to have that.
